Mr. John Akortiakumah is an Assistant Lecturer at Department of Nursing, School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ghana.
Education
He had both his Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Nursing and Bachelor of Nursing Degrees from University of Ghana. He also pursued a certificate course in Health Administration and Management at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). He pursued another Degree in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at School of Anaesthesia, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, where he was trained and certified by Medical and Dental Council, Ghana, as a Certified Registered Anaesthetist. Mr. Akortiakumah has a Diploma in Nursing from the University of Ghana and has a Registered General Nursing Certificate from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana upon completion of his programme at Nursing Training College, Ho.
Work Experience
Before joining UHAS, Mr. John Akortiakumah started his carrier as a Registered Nurse at the Ghana Health Service. He further trained and became a Principal Certified Registered Anaesthetist and the Head of the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Department of the Krachi West District Hospital. John was a member of the Management of the Krachi West District Hospital and previously acted as the Medical Superintendent. He was also the Head of Clinical Care and the Focal Person for Accident and Emergency as well as the Focal Person for Research, Coordinator for Quality Assurance and a member of the Quality Improvement Team of the Krachi West District Hospital.
Mr. Akortiakumah was a part-time tutor at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Kete-Krachi for about 6 years. He was a key member of the transformational team of the Krachi West District Hospital who saw massive improvement and transformation in quality of health care and infrastructural development of the hospital over a ten-year period. He worked with the Ghana Health Service for 16 years.
Science/Research output
His research interests include postoperative recovery; postoperative quality of life; maternal and neonatal health care; advocacy for equity and quality health care; anaesthesia for obstetric, paediatric and abdominal surgeries. Other research areas of interest include health policy and health system strengthening; prioritization of patient-centered care in health systems; patient safety; occupational health; motivation of health professionals and its influence on retention and acceptance of postings to hard- to- reach areas; and adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
His passion is to use his professional clinical experience and research expertise to influence public health policy and decision making and control the burden of preventable diseases in low-income settings and among underprivileged populations.
