Miss Bernice Boafoaa Gyapong is an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Midwifery, School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ghana. Prior to joining UHAS, she worked with the Ghana health service as a Registered Midwife from 2007 to 2016.
Education / Trainings
She had her professional midwifery training at the Sekondi Nursing and Midwifery Training College. She further obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Midwifery at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). She then proceeded to pursue a Master of Science Degree in Midwifery from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. She has participated in several trainings and workshops on Maternal and Neonatal Care
Work Experience
She worked with the Ghana Health Service as a Registered Midwife for 9 years at Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Dixcove Government Hospital and Tema Polyclinic. As a clinical midwife, she functioned as a maternity ward manager, a preceptor for nursing and midwifery students and a peer practice coordinator for accelerating maternal and newborn survival.
Research Interest/Output
Her research areas include birth place decision making, women’s experiences of maternal healthcare services and over-medicalisation of childbirth. Her MSc thesis was “Factors influencing women’s decision making on choice of place of birth in sub-Saharan Africa: a qualitative systematic review”
