Public Health Nursing (PHN)
Welcome to the Department of Public Health Nursing. We are thrilled to have you here and excited to share the vital work we do to promote health and well-being across communities. The Department of Public Health Nursing currently offers a four-year Bachelor’s Degree programme, a three-year sandwich programme for students who complete an access course, and a two-year post-diploma programme. There are plans to begin to offer programmes in Occupational Health and Emergency, Disaster and Safety Medical Services. Plans are far advanced to commence various MPhil and PhD programmes in the Department. The Department of Public Health Nursing is dedicated to training highly skilled, knowledgeable, and dedicated nurses to provide comprehensive health care services to the general population. Aside the provision of care, professionals from the Department are also focused on providing education, prevention and advocacy services, especially to vulnerable populations. As public health nurses, we believe that everyone, regardless of background, deserves access to quality healthcare and the knowledge to make informed health decisions. As a result, we serve as educators, providing critical health education to individuals, families and entire communities. Through our outreach and programmes, we empower people to take charge of their health, adopt healthy lifestyles and prevent disease. Through education, research and community-centered care, we are committed to improving public health outcomes and ensuring a healthier, more equitable future for all. The Department is committed to collaborating with national and international institutions that share similar values and ideals in the areas of research, education and community development. Our team is also deeply involved in cutting-edge research that informs our practice, generates knowledge, influences policy and enhances the national capacity to address current and emerging health challenges. Some of our key research areas include: Chronic Disease Prevention: Developing strategies to prevent and control chronic non-communicable diseases (like diabetes, heart disease and hypertension) by using community-based strategies. Maternal and Child Health: Promoting healthy pregnancies and early childhood development. Infectious Disease Control: Studying trends and creating solutions to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, especially in resource-limited settings, by adopting community-based approaches in implementing integrated immunization. Promoting equity and minimizing Health Disparities: Working to eliminate health inequities and improve healthcare access in underserved populations. Mental Health Promotion: Integrating mental health into public health practices and reducing stigma. Health Services and Systems: Investigating ways to improve efficiency, accessibility, and equity in healthcare delivery.
