Brief background

The School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) was established in 2011/2012 Academic Year as one of the foundation Schools of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. The School of Nursing and Midwifery is poised to change the face of Nursing and Midwifery in Ghana by training Nurses and Midwives to be competent practitioners, scholars and confident leaders the nursing profession. To achieve this, the school designed curricular that has clinical practice at the centre of the preparation of Nursing and Midwifery students, to prepare them to be able to synthesize knowledge, scientific evidence and innovative technology to guide the nursing practice and also become leaders. The training prepares the students to influence and guide the direction of actions, opinions and attitude of others, manage the structure and process of the care environment, participate in the formulation of healthcare policies, develop and implement professional standards of nursing in Ghana.

 

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has a four-year Bachelor’s Degree programme that seeks to contribute to development of Nursing and Midwifery to become a discipline through its professional practice and scholarly based programmes.  

 

Areas of specialization in our Bachelor’s programmes are:

  • Nursing  
  • Midwifery
  • Public Health Nursing
  • Health Service Administration (SONAM incubating the programme)

 

The programmes will provide graduates with a clinical site-based learning experiences that will assist students to develop clinical skills that will enable them to provide quality and safe patient care in both acute care facilities and in communities.

 

The Bachelor of Nursing programme seeks to equip Nursing students to be able to:  

  • develop problem solving and self-directed learning skills.
  • acquire critical thinking skills to address clients’ problems.
  • identify research problems from clinical practice settings.
  • use scholarly knowledge to inform policy that will improve Nursing practice in Ghana and internationally.

 

 

The Bachelor of Midwifery programmes also seek to equip Midwifery students to:

  • develop problem solving and self-directed learning skills.
  • acquire critical thinking skills to address mother and newborn child’s problem during pregnancy and delivery.
  • develop professional skills that will enable them safely care for mother and child through pregnancy and delivery.
  • identify research problems from clinical practice for investigation.
  • use scholarly knowledge to inform policy that will include midwifery practice in Ghana and internationally.

 

The Bachelor of Public Health programme seeks to equip the Public Health Nursing students to:

  • develop problem solving and self-directed learning skills.
  • acquire critical thinking skills to address Public Health and Environmental Health issues and problems in the communities.
  • identify research problems from clinical practice for investigation and implementation
  • use scholarly knowledge to inform policy that will improve the health of people in Ghana and internationally.

     

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has a two-year Master of Philosophy programmes currently running and they are:

  • MPhil in Nursing  
  • MPhil in Midwifery
